Send a drawing over email

Often we are required to send a drawing and set of drawings in an email to a client or consultant. The use of different software versions and external references can make this a tricky and time consuming task.

A quick and easy way to send a drawing in an email is to export it first, and then send it.

Exporting is different then saving back in that when you export a drawing advanced ADT/ABS objects are converted into simple lines, arcs, and circles.

Using the Save as command doesn't do this. To Export a drawing follow these easy steps.

  1. Open the drawing you wish to email.
  2. From the File menu, choose Export to AutoCAD. I usually choose 2000 Format... but you can choose a later format as well.
  3. AutoCAD will ask for a location to save the new file. It will also add the "ACAD-" prefix to the file name. This will help to identify the file as being exported back.
  4. Once you click the Save button, the drawing will be exported back. All external references will be bound in the drawing, and layer status will be maintained.
  5. Email the file to the recipient.
