Client provided CAD Files...

When a client provides us with CAD files to "jump start" our design process, this may be a red flag.

Will the client be providing CAD files ?

If the Client provides files, we should be asking these kinds of questions...

• Can we modify layers, pens, etc. to our standard?
• Do we verify all dimensions or just accept the files as being right?
• Who pays for the time to correct bad drawing files?
• If we do not receive the files in a timely manner, what then?
• How will these file be delivered?
• What software was used to create these files?
• Are the files translated from another system?
• What CAD standard was used to produce the files?
• Can we get some sample files before you sign the contract and lock in on a price?

If the Client is providing only hardcopies:

• Do we trust these prints?
• Do we verify dimensions?

Accepting and working from other peoples files puts us in the ownership role of their work. Not that we now take real ownership. We cannot use their work in a way that they did not intend, but their work now becomes part of ours and we are fully responsible for that work. By building on top of their work, we take their content on as our own.
