Layer Standards

Layering

AIA layering guidelines are the basis for our layering system. This uses a colored layering system. Colors are used to assign pen weights for plotting. Layers are named in the following format:

Field 1 Discipline
| Field 2 Major Group
| | Field 3 Minor Group
| | | Field 4 Modifier
| | | |
X-XXXX-XXXX-X

A single letter designating the type of construction represents the Discipline Field. (i.e. Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, and Plumbing, Etc.)

The Major Group Field is represented by four characters designating the specific building component. (i.e. Wall, Window, Doors, Etc.)

The Minor Group Field is represented by four characters designating further definition of the Major Group. (i.e. Case, Outl, Full, Prht, Etc.)

The Status Field is represented by one character designating the status of the component. These consist of three categories:

D= Existing to be Demolished
E= Existing to Remain
N= New Work

Refer to the layer lists for a complete listing of the layer names and components they include. Be sure to use the layer best applicable for the component you are defining. The creation of new layer, not listed must be approved before use by the CAD Management Staff.
